The Laraways Say One Thing, But Do Another
The Laraways have been one of the “Stop 49” campaign’s most active spokespeople. First, the
campaign
paid for them to submit a Voter’s Pamphlet Statement, in which they makes some confusing and egregious claims.
“Stop 49” also featured the Laraways in TV and radio ads, where they continued with an inaccurate and extravagant analysis of the possible effects of Measure 49:
After all this, “Stop 49” featured the Laraways again, this time in an 8-page glossy brochure detailing how their spokespeople would “lose everything” if Measure 49 passes. In the brochure, Debra Laraway states,
"If Measure 49 passes, our whole way of life -- as farmers -- as we know it, would be gone."
The truth is that the Laraways have filed Measure 37 claims to subdivide their designated Exclusive Farm Use land to build 74 houses and 70 multi-family residential units. This is not a case of small farmers fighting to subsist in the face of big government, the way the "Stop 49" campaign has framed it. This is a case of people seeking to make a fortune by tearing up and building massive subdivisions on some of Oregon's most precious land.
Here are their two Measure 37 development claims- See for yourself the truth behind what the Laraways are saying:
Laraway and Sons Inc. (06-M062; M130193) 1830 Eastside Road, Hood River 34 acres, zoned Exclusive Farm Use Intent: 5 acre farm dwellings $1,566,523.00 in compensation demanded Status: Approved by State and Pending with County
Laraway, William (06-M026; M129463) 2371 Old Dalles Drive, Hood River 51 acres, zoned Exclusive Farm Use Intent:
Divide into one 21-acre parcel, (to be developed at a density of 4
units an acre on half and 6.7 units an acre, multi-family residential,
on other half), 26 one acre parcels, and five acres undeveloped $14,904,705.00 in compensation demanded Status: Approved by County and State
