Measure 37 Claims Filed on Oregon's Coast

The Oregon coast was hit hard by Measure 37 claims. Directly after Measure 37 passed in 2004, Plum Creek Timber filed claims to develop 22,000 acres in Lincoln County. The company has recently withdrawn some of their initial claims, but is still seeking to develop about 1,800 acres of forests in Lincoln City.Oregon Coast Measure 37 Claims

The owners of the Oregon Sea Lion Caves have also filed claims to develop the land above the caves. The claims are for “unspecified commercial development,” which could be practically anything. Other notable claims include:

  • The Knox Baird Davis claim in Curry County, for development of approximately 1,500 acres of land along the lower reaches of the Rogue River, above Gold Beach
  • The Sweet Ranch claim, also in Curry County, for development as a Bandon Dunes-style resort on 750 acres of the most scenic area between Cape Blanco State Park and Floras Lake
  • Three Stimson Lumber Company claims in Clatsop County totaling 540 acres, asking for housing subdivisions
  • The Reith's claim in Clatsop County, asking for suburban development on 180 acres along the scenic Lewis and Clark River

These are only a few of the development claims which lie along the coast. There are over 120 claims pending in Lincoln City alone, and there are 90 claims in Tillamook County- many of which lie on the farm and pasture ground of the Tillamook County Creamer Association’s beloved Tillamook cheese, butter and ice cream. There are also hundreds of smaller claims to build anywhere from 10-50 houses directly along the coast.

These coastal counties have no way of paying off the claimant, and if Measure 37 stays on the books, they will be forced to allow construction to begin. We must correct Measure 37 and put a stop to this “development” before our coast becomes polluted with resorts and strip malls.
